Concerts I wish I had attended: Chris Ledoux
75Chris LeDoux
When I got home from the concert in Cheyenne, my mom wanted to know if he was as good looking in real life as he was on the cover of Stampede.
He sure was!
The next year she made a point of seeing him in concert.
In August of 1998, Chris LeDoux performed at the local county fair. That is the first concert I regret missing.
The year before, my cousin and I had attended one of his concerts in Cheyenne, Wyoming, and had loved every second of it. The only regret from that concert was not catching one of the roses he threw out into the crowd.
In Cheyenne, my cousin and I had been within thirty feet of the stage. It was awesome, and I wanted the same experience again. Except, now I was married, and this time it would be with my husband.
... I would be able to dance with him, the love of my life, instead of some drunk, who happened to be standing near by ...
I asked my love to take me, and he agreed, but said we would have to sit in the bleachers due to his broken foot. I did not think sitting on cold bleachers would be worth the ticket price, so we stayed home.
Three or four years later, Chris was back. Again, for some dumb reason (probably money), we passed up the opportunity to see him perform a bit of magic. We reasoned that he came through the area often enough we would be able to catch a concert the next time around. We promised ourselves that we would go, and I began setting money aside for an all-out date, complete with overnight baby-sitting.
However, there would be no next time. Chris LeDoux passed away in March of 2005, from a rare form of cancer. He was 56 years old. Husband to one woman, father of five. 1976 world champion professional bareback bronc rider.
I will probably always kick myself, for not going when I had the chance.

A Behind the Scenes Look at Chris
While in college, I had the opportunity to set up for a Newsboys concert, in exchange for free admission to the concert. After spending the day hauling stage pieces and equipment, I decided not to attend the concert, but spend a quiet evening backstage watching a little girl, who belonged to a member of Plank Eye, one of the cover bands.
While I was enjoying the child's company, the truck driver of the stage crew found me, and we began talking. She told me of the different bands the stage crew had worked with, and the different attitudes musicians had about themselves and their importance. There were not many of them that had impressed her. In fact, only two did she speak of with pleasure: Metallica and Chris Ledoux.
Metallica had given her, and all the stage crew members, nice leather jackets. She had found them very respectful.
Chris Ledoux had involved them in several pranks to be pulled during different concerts. Most were pretty innocent, but one had gotten the stage crew in trouble with their boss.
Chris had requested use of the confetti shooters, and filled them with horse apples from the corral. These, he shot out over the crowd during the concert.
She couldn't stop laughing at the memory.

My Boys...
Even my children see the folly in passing up a Chris LeDoux concert. They often chide their father for not taking me when he had the chance. They love his songs. Chris' memory lives on.
The boys want to hear of cowboys, rodeos and pranks. They enjoy the songs of true love, and dream of having a wives that will help them to achieve their dreams. I may have introduced the children to Chris' music, but they fell in love with it on their own. Blue Eyes and Freckles is their favorite song by Chris.

I doubt I will ever forget my first Chris LeDoux concert. The Fourth of July at the Greeley Stampede, with three of my four kids there. We had not expected that brother would be able to go--he worked at a local grain elevator, and they are usually exceedingly busy early in July. However, rain came, he was off for the day, and we were able to get a seat for him that allowed us all to be together in the stands.
What a night! Surrounded by other Chris fans, the energy and excitement were incredible, and Chris and the band did all our favorites! Then there were the fireworks afterwards. Nope. I don't think I've had many Fourths to compare with that one. Thanks, Lord, for the day and an amazing man, and thanks, Christa, for refresing the memories.
good hub again
I will never forget getting to see him at the Greeley Stampede it was only one or two years before he died. We had pit tickets and were only feet from the stage.
Nice Hub,
This brings back some memories. The American Legion in Fort Bridger, Wyo had him play at a dance one 4th of July in the late 1970 early 1980's timeframe, after the local rodeo. I attended and this was very fun. I used to have some of his records.
Keep on Hubbing
5 boys! so cute too! You are one busy lady!
Love this tribute, got lost in the story. I've kicked myself in the butt many a time for not going to a concert for one reason or another thinking there'd be another time. I remember my mother's story of how she missed the last show Elvis ever did in the seventies. My dad wouldn't take her, is the reason she gave. I could see the sadness in her eyes. I wonder if she's still sad about it. Haven't heard her speak of it in ages and ages.
Love "Blue eyes and freckles" by the way. So cute! And yes, no wonder it hold a place in your and your boys' hearts. To hear that song sung in concert would be so way cool for your boys, wouldn't it? Well, thank goodness for YouTube and other such sites huh?
Noticed the vid at the end. Nice addition.
I was able to meet Chris LeDoux twice. I saw him in concert numerous times (yes, I've lost count). Definitely an amazing man, and a big influence in my songwriting and life!

Excellent hub! Thank you for answering my hub request!
I had the pleasure of seeing Chris Ledoux perform at Billy Bob's in Ft. Worth about a year after his liver transplant. It was the best concert I've ever been to. The man was incredible. Towards the end of his performance he mounted a mechanical bull that was two stories up from the stage. I don't know how anyone could ride like he rode that night, and then to realize that it hadn't even been a year since his liver transplant. His doctor must have been going crazy over that one. I get chills thinking about his performance that night.
Chris came back to Billy Bob's a year later and we once again got to go see him. This particular concert didn't live up to the excitement of the first, but was still a great performance.
We too, never got to see him again, because he passed away. The world lost a great performer, a great cowboy and most of all, a great man.
